ORCID aims to reduce the burden put on researchers and improve the way information is shared. Funding agencies will be able to track and correctly indentify their grants and related outputs to the correct researcher, no matter how many times they change institution, or indeed, name. Research funders are increasingly integrating ORCID and other persistent identifiers in their application processes.

Getting your ORCID iD without signing in

This information will make it easier for us to identify potential ORCID records that may belong to you and provide you with a quicker turnaround. Ensure that data such as peer reviews and other works automatically get pushed to your record when they become available by linking your record with Datacite, Crossref or Publons. Add funding information to your record by manually, or by importing from other systems such as DimensionsWizard. If you try to register with the same email address as before, ORCID will ask you to log in rather than register. However if you register with a different email address, ORCID will assume you are a different person. If you can’t remember whether you already registered, look yourself up using the Search bar at the top of the ORCID homepage.

I am not getting any emails from ORCID for my password reset. What can I do?

An increasing number of publishers and research funders are using ORCID iDs as a way for researchers to identify themselves when submitting publications or grant applications. Further, names can change (such as with marriage); there are cultural differences in name ordering conventions; journals make inconsistent use of first-name abbreviations, name suffixes, and middle initials; and employ different writing systems and transliterations. Researchers and scholars face the ongoing challenge of distinguishing their research activities from those of others with similar names. They need to be able to easily and uniquely connect their identity to research objects such as datasets, equipment, articles, media stories, citations, experiments, patents, and notebooks.

Go to our Forgot password page, select the ORCID iD option, enter your registered email address in the email field, and select the Recover Account Details button. A common response we get once our researchers receive their ORCID iDs is, “Why does everyone else have a normal, 16-digit ORCID identifier, but mine ends in X? ” As much as we wish we could tell you that you won a prize, the reason for it is much more technical. Otherwise, all you need is the email address that you registered your ORCID account with, a working internet connection, a web browser, and less than a minute of your time. We strongly recommend adding at least one backup email address, so you can recover access to your ORCID record in case you lose access to another email.

Individual record holders can control what information is displayed publicly, what is shared with trusted partners, and who those trusted partners are. It ranges in values from “0” – “10,” with X representing the value “10.” The checksum ensures the other 15 digits of your identifier form a coherent iD. Identifiers are all randomly assigned (and no, you cannot change your iD), with the last character of an identifier being a Checksum.

Ensure your ORCID is connected so you can easily share your data between your record and an increasing number of funders, publishers, data repositories, and other research workflows.
