The Shadow daily strip was collected decades later in two comic book series from two different publishers (see below), first in 1988 and then again in 1999. Readick returned as The Shadow to host a final CBS mystery anthology that fall. The series disappeared from CBS airwaves on March 27, 1935, due to Street & Smith’s insistence that the radio storyteller be completely replaced by the master crime-fighter described in Walter B. Gibson’s ongoing pulps. Weston believes Cranston is merely a rich playboy who dabbles in detective work out of curiosity.

Universal allowed Raimi to develop an original treatment inspired by The Shadow in 1987 with the development of Darkman.8 David Koepp had listened to the radio serial of The Shadow as a child, when CBS re-ran it on Sunday nights. Koepp was hired in 1990 to write a new draft, and was able to find the right tone that the studio liked.7 Bregman remembers, ‘Some of them were light, some of them were darker, and others were supposedly funnier – which they weren’t. Behind the mask of The Shadow is a young wealthy man known as Lamont Cranston, also known as Kent Allard. The second attempt in 1958 was titled The Invisible Avenger; it never aired. The two episodes produced were compiled into a theatrical film and released with the same title.

Hence, the term “shadow docket,” which University of Chicago law professor William Baude coined in 2015. Returning to New York City, Cranston resumes his former life as a wealthy playboy, while secretly operating as the Shadow, a vigilante who terrorizes the city’s underworld. He recruits some of the people he saves from criminals to act as his agents, providing him with information and specialist knowledge. When it comes to the emergency docket, the justices likely do not write opinions because they see a need for acting quickly. In these cases, there is no apparent harm to keeping the lower courts’ preliminary injunctions – which freeze the status quo – in place while the justices write opinions. If the dissenting justices had time to write, a justice in the majority could do so as well.

Origin of the character’s name

Early stories explain he was once a famed aviator who fought for the French during World War I, known by the alias the “Black Eagle” according to one character in The Shadow’s Shadow (1933). Later stories revised this alias as the “Dark Eagle”, beginning with The Shadow Unmasks. After the war’s conclusion, Allard finds a new challenge in waging war on criminals.

From 1989 to 1992, DC published a new Shadow comic book series, The Shadow Strikes! This series was set in the 1930s and returned The Shadow to his pulp origins. During its run, it featured The Shadow’s first-ever team-up with Doc Savage, another popular hero of the pulp magazine era.

Meanwhile, Xi Meng lures Fu to an orphanage, where he finds thugs waiting to kill him. Xi Wang then appears to hold off Fu and instructs Xi Meng to detonate the orphanage before dying in the blast, but Fu survives the explosion and is arrested by the police. While being transported, Fu escapes, prompting his crew to flee as well. Hu and the others are subdued by Wong, while Fu fatally stabs a policeman and Xi Meng at a metro station. Although both are severely injured, Wong buys enough time for the police to arrive, leading to Fu’s cornering and arrest.

The Tulku attempts to purge the darkness from his soul and alleviate his inner pain. Cranston initially refuses and tries to stab the Tulku with a gold Phurba. Ultimately, Cranston succumbs to the Tulku’s tutelage and learns how to cloud men’s minds so that he becomes nearly invisible, save for his shadow. The Shadow was the first pulp character to be given his own ongoing title.

One of the doctors (also an agent of The Shadow) tells Khan that they were able to save his life by removing a part of his brain “that nobody uses”, which in reality controlled Khan’s psychic abilities. Soon after, Cranston and Margo begin a serious relationship and join forces to fight the criminal underworld. By the late 1940s, however, pulp magazines had become less popular with readers, and they were replaced by inexpensive paperbacks and comic books.
